Greenway Garden

The Greenway Garden is a thriving hub in the community with lots of activities, and around 20 growers who have come together to grow food, build a sense of community, and improve their health and wellbeing. The project is led by Murrayburn & Hailesland Community Park Association, and is supported by Wester Hailes Growing Communities.

It’s a sizeable garden with over 60 raised beds, a community shed, tool shed, and forest garden. The beds are tended by local households and volunteers who grow food for the Sunflower Pantry and other local community food projects. There are regular events and workshops, not only about gardening but wellbeing, cooking, mindfulness, art, music, scavenger hunts, and many a community meal – whatever you’d like to use the space for! There’s also frequently Natural Play workshops for kids, run with support from The Green Team Edinburgh – bug hunting, arts and crafts, storytelling, games and more to get them creative and exploring in the outdoors.

The lovely group are always bringing along homemade goodies using produce grown in the garden – soups, pies, jams, ice lollies, cakes, curries – the works! All enjoyed with a cuppa in the roomy garden shed, many a food coma has occurred here.

Fun Fact: The garden houses two beehives, with regular beekeeping workshops run by beekeeper Wade, where anyone is welcome to get a beekeeping suit on, take a closer look, and learn all about these amazing pollinators!

Check out the garden’s Facebook page for updates.

Greendykes Community Allotments

Greendykes Community Allotments started in 2006 following interest from tenants. There are currently 20 plots but there are plans to extend. Housing Officers have worked with residents at the two adjacent blocks to manage the site.

In 2024, with support of Community Garden Jen, the group got together to refresh the allotments. Alongside this a Growing Youth programme, supported young people to build a shelter over a seating area and reskin the poly tunnel.

Good Roots Stenhouse

The Good Roots garden was created by Stenhouse Baptist Church in 2021, with the goal of transforming an unloved grassy space into a community garden – and what a success it’s been!

There’s now a lovely wee group of folk regularly meeting each Thursday to grow and harvest fruit and veg while enjoying a good chat and coffee. They also have local primary school kids coming by weekly during the summer, and a wheelchair accessible garden space was created for some friends that drop-in weekly – the group have worked hard to create a relaxing, safe, and inclusive space for everyone in the community to enjoy.

While small in number, they’re a welcoming group that love their garden space – and you’d be very welcome to join them on Thursdays from 10am.

Giles Street

Friends of Giles Street is a credit to Sarah, Tricia, and Catrina, who did fantastic work on the street throughout Covid restrictions – tidying up, painting, repairing, planting, and much more – and have completely transformed the area as a result!

They made friends and built a community along the way by simply picking up a hoe and some binbags and getting out there, a great example of local people impacting their community through greenspace and gardening projects.
